Vigil Services vs Wakes

Posted January 3, 2025

Wakes and Vigils, though similar, have distinct differences.

Wakes are social gatherings held to mourn and remember the deceased, typically before the funeral. They provide an opportunity for friends and family to offer support and share memories, often held in private homes or funeral homes, and may include viewing the body, sharing stories, prayers, and sometimes refreshments.

Vigils, on the other hand, are periods of watchful attention, often for prayer or reflection, and can occur before or after the funeral. They can take place in various locations such as homes, churches, or public spaces, and often involve prayers, readings, or silent observance. Wakes are more social and focused on communal mourning, whereas vigils are more about reflection and spiritual observance
